Plan now to get home safely on New Year's Eve

Posted: Updated:

This is not news: Drinking and driving don't mix.

So if adult beverages are part of your plans to celebrate the new year, make plans now to get home safely.

The easiest way is to designate a driver who either doesn't drink or who agrees to forgo intoxicating beverages on December 31.

Public transportation is not available in most Texoma cities, but Uber recently expanded its ride-sharing service to Sherman, Denison and all of Grayson County in Texas. Many Oklahoma cities have taxi service, so check now to see if this can be an option for you and your friends; reservations may be required or recommended.

Texas party-goers can also take advantage of the AAA Texas Holiday Safe Ride Program available from 6 p.m. December 31 to 6 a.m. on January 1. Just call 800-AAA-HELP to arrange for a ride home; an AAA membership is not required.

In Oklahoma you can call the same number for AAA's Tipsy Tow program from now through 4 a.m. on January 2. It will provide free transportation for up to two people and their vehicle within a 15-mile radius, but it is available only in Ardmore and Shawnee in the KTEN viewing area. Revelers in metropolitan Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Bartlesville, Enid, Muskogee, Tahlequah and Lawton can also call for a Tipsy Tow ride.

AAA Oklahoma provides a colorful menu guide to mocktails like the Merrymaker, Snowcapped Crantini and The Buttered Bum that are festive but non-alcoholic.
