SHERMAN, Texas -- Fire claimed the life of one person at a Sherman motel on Thursday.

The blaze broke out in a ground floor unit and damaged several rooms of the two-story Executive Inn at 2015 Texoma Parkway.

"It was very scary," said hotel manager Madan Ghimire. "Smoke was all over, and so I went from room-to-room to get people out and secure."

The flames were extinguished within an hour, but firefighters found the body of a woman inside one of the rooms.

"It's an active crime scene, and we have to treat it as that because we don't know exactly what happened," said Sherman police spokesman Sgt. D.M. Hampton. "Until we determine that, we are going to treat it as a suspicious death or a homicide."

Following a preliminary investigation, police said the death could be accident, but said more information is needed before making a final determination.

The identity of the victim was not released, and the fire marshal is working to determine what triggered the blaze.

Grayson County tax records show the hotel was built in 1958.
