LOVE COUNTY, Okla. -- A fatal accident on Interstate 35 slowed traffic north of Thackerville early Monday.

The Oklahoma Department of Public Safety said the driver of a southbound box truck hauling nuts and bolts fell asleep at the wheel just before 4 a.m. The truck veered off the roadway, hit a guardrail, and turned on its side.

The driver -- identified as 27-year-old Mario Zuniga of Farmers Branch, Texas -- was ejected from the vehicle by the impact and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger was injured; he was taken to a hospital in Gainesville, Texas, for treatment. Troopers said neither man was wearing a seat belt.

One southbound lane of traffic near mile marker 8 was shut down by the accident just before 4 a.m. It was five hours before both lanes reopened.

The cause of the accident was under investigation, and the name of the victim was not released.
