SHERMAN, Texas -- It didn't take long.

Just two days after President Trump nominated long time Grayson County District Attorney Joe Brown to be the next U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas, there are two candidates for his old job.

Both now serve as assistant DAs under Brown -- Brett Smith and Britton Brooks.

"Long story short: This is more than a job for me... it's my life," Brooks said in announcing his candidacy.

And Smith? "I think I have the experience and maturity to run the office," he said.

Brooks has worked in the county for 10 years now, serving as a felony trial attorney in the DA's office.

"For me, being in a courtroom on the right side means everything... helping victims of crimes mean everything... and helping out law enforcement means everything," he said.

Brooks added that one of his main goals is to keep working to prosecute child molesters and domestic abuse cases.

"I also want to be sure we are always employing the best and strongest most-tenured prosecutors as possible," Brooks said.

Smith has been working at the side of Joe Brown for 15 years, serving as a special prosecutor.

"There's approximately nine defendants in our jail right now charged with murder," he said. "We need a district attorney who's experienced and ready to start Day One running on the ground to get this done."

But Smith says there's not much that needs to be changed in the district attorney's office.

"I think some fine tuning is going to be required in the future just to keep up with the demand and the amount of people in our jail," he said.
