RICHARDSON, Texas -- Police in this Dallas suburb now say the father of three-year-old Sherin Mathews has admitted to moving her body from the family's home after he said she choked and then stopped breathing while drinking milk on October 7.

A child's body was found on Sunday morning in a culvert less than a mile away. On Tuesday, the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that it used dental records to confirm that it was Sherin's body.

Wesley Mathews, 37, was arrested and accused of felony injury to a child. Police said additional charges are possible.

Sherin was the subject of a massive search by law enforcement and community members after her parents declined to cooperate with the investigation. An Amber Alert was initially issued and then withdrawn by police.

Investigators said Wesley Mathews and his attorney went to the Richardson Police Department voluntarily on Monday and agreed to speak with detectives after being read his rights. The police narrative describes what happened next:

Wesley Mathews advised to detective Diaz he had been trying to get the 3-year-old girl to drink her milk in the garage. Wesley Mathews said she wouldn't listen to him. Eventually the 3-year-old girl began to drink the milk. Wesley Mathews then physically assisted the 3-year-old girl in drinking the milk. The 3-year-old girl began to choke. She was coughing and her breathing slowed. Eventually, Wesley Mathews no longer felt a pulse on the child and believed that she had died.

Wesley Mathews then admitted to removing the child from the home.

Mathews initially had told police that he placed Sherin in the backyard as punishment after failing to drink her milk. He had said when he returned, she was missing.

Police were suspicious, in part, because Mathews had failed to report the disappearance for several hours.

Bond for Mathews was set at $1 million. Police have not yet reported how the child that was found died.
