HOWE, Texas -- Two people were arrested on drug charges after a pursuit on U.S. 75 early Monday morning.

Howe police said nearly 10 pounds of marijuana was found in a red bag that was tossed from the vehicle after officers tried to pull it over for a broken license plate light violation.

"When he initiated his overhead lights, from the passenger side of the vehicle, that's when a red bag -- big plastic bag -- came flying out the window," Howe police spokesman Lt. Michael Hill said.

Van Alstyne police joined the chase and picked up the bag as Howe officers tracked the car.

"Once the officer got up there, got both the passenger and driver out of the vehicle, he was also able to determine there was merchandise... just packed in the back seat of the vehicle," Hill said.

More than $3,000 of suspected stolen goods was seized from the vehicle, including hoverboards, a drone, clothing, and cigarettes.

"That's quite a bit of marijuana for somebody to be traveling back and forth with," said Howe police spokesman Lt. Michael Hill. "You're gonna believe it's gonna be used for delivery... it's not gonna be called 'personal use.'"

Denison resident Ricardo Lara Jr., 33, and Karla Covarrubias-Huerta of Sherman, 25, were booked into the Grayson County Jail on charges of delivery of marijuana and tampering with evidence.

Howe police are reaching out to local retailers to see if any of the seized merchandise belongs to them.
