SHERMAN, Texas -- The superintendent of the Sherman Independent School District visited with Grayson County Commissioners on Tuesday to discuss the district's revised bond proposal.

The Commissioners were interested in details of the the $176 million plan, which includes a new high school and technology upgrades.

"A project of this magnitude has economic benefits, and ultimately educational benefits, for kids across Grayson County," Superintendent Dr. David Hicks said. "A high school serving Sherman as the largest school district in the county has potential for tremendous impact ... but most importantly, it's about our kids, and the educational programs that we will offer at the school."

Hicks said better education will be a positive thing for Grayson County.

"What we do know is that bringing businesses and attracting new families is critically linked to the education that kids get," he added.

The Sherman Economic Development Corporation agrees.

"Businesses look at school districts when they're considering a location, I would say it ranks in the top three items that they look for. We want our kids to be fully prepared" said SEDCO executive Frank Gadek. "And with a great school system, people will move to the community."

Hicks said the district will hold meetings all next week to answer taxpayer questions about the Sherman ISD bond proposal:

  • Monday-Thursday at 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
  • Friday at 8:30 a.m. and noon

The meetings will take place at the SISD administration building, 2701 Loy Lake Road.

Early voting on the bond issue will begin on October 23 and run through November 3. Election day is November 7. Click here for details about voting locations and times.
