Threatening callers claim to be from IRS

Posted: Updated:

ARDMORE, Okla. -- Phone scammers claiming to represent the Internal Revenue Service are targeting Carter County residents.

People getting the calls say they were told they owe money to the IRS, and if they don't pay a warrant will be issued for their arrest.

Carter County Sheriff Chris Bryant said seven people have come to his office thinking they have a warrant, but he says that's not how the IRS works.

"It's just a scam," Bryant said.  "I've talked to the folks at the IRS. The IRS will not be calling anybody if you owe back taxes or owe money — period. They will be sending a letter."

If you receive a threatening call like this, report it to your local law enforcement agency.
