DURANT, Okla. -- The Great American Giveaway looks like your standard yard sale, but there's an important twist: Nothing is sold; everything is free.

Items ranging from doors to full kitchen cabinet sets are handed out with no contracts and no strings attached.

It's all orchestrated by the Bryan County United Way.

"Whenever I can find out there's something free in this community, I grab it and I give it back to our citizens,"  said United Way director Pamela Robinson.

Saturday's event was the second Great American Giveaway, and it's bigger than the first time around.

But this is no "free-for-all" -- people in need actually submit their names in a lottery and then get to choose from the available items to take home. The whole town seemed to come out to help people load up their trucks.

"I think its really cool that people who don't have much can come out and get new stuff," said Durant chiropractor Dr. Janna Cottingame. "It's mostly all brand-new stuff, and they can go replace something old that's in their house with something new."

Some families were replacing their kitchen sinks; others made use of surplus building supplies to repair damaged homes.

And what took a year-and-a-half to collect is now helping people who need it the most.

"This is the day I wait for, because up to today, it's a lot of hard work," Pamela Robinson said. "But to get to be here and see the joy on people's faces, listen to their story on how they are going to be using the items...  it's worth every bit of work."
