Ardmore volunteers set Saturday cleanup event

ARDMORE, Okla. -- A volunteer group in Ardmore is calling on all litter-haters and clean freaks this weekend to participate in the city's first-ever Dash for Trash on Saturday morning.

"We have a severe litter problem in Ardmore, Oklahoma," Ardmore Clean Team founder Margaret Ward said. "My main goal is to raise awareness."

Ward, an Ardmore native, said she has been pleasantly surprised with the growth of her civic-minded organization.

"In the beginning we were hoping for 25 people; we now have close to 130 people,"  she said.

Dash for Trash organizers are asking three-person teams of volunteers to register at the corner of Broadway and Mill Street at 9 a.m. Saturday. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. Each team will then set out to beautify a littered stretch of Ardmore.

Participants who return with their trash at noon get a free lunch courtesy of Rib Crib.

Clean Team member Phillip Capshaw said spending just five minutes picking up trash can make a huge difference. He adds that litter elimination is more than just a hobby for him... and it can become addicting.

"Once you get out there and you see it, you can't un-see it," he said. "You drive down the road and you see all the litter, and it's about awareness."
