Crews Battling Large Grass Fire Near Turner Falls

DAVIS, OK -- All day Tuesday, fire crews in the Davis area battled a raging grass fire.

Officials say it started Monday afternoon, near interstate 35 and was contained, but started back up Tuesday morning.

Currently, the area still burning is near turner falls park and cross bar ranch.

All campgrounds at the park have been shut down as a precaution, and the park itself will be closed until Wednesday morning.

Multiple crews, including the Davis fire department and the National Guard are working to get it under control, but officials say the rough terrain is making access difficult.

"Very difficult, there's not much we can do right now, because we're not going to tear up anyone's equipment trying to fight it and put it out, so that's why we called in the helicopter and bulldozers so we can go in and cut a fire break, and the helicopter dropping water," said Chief Jeremy Bumgarner.

Officials believe the fire has burned between 800 to 1,000 acres so far, but no injuries have been reported.

Without rain, they estimate it could take up to two days to put out.
