Sherman Bearcats 2016 Football Preview
Starters returning: 7/11 (O/D). 2015: 1-9
There is a new buzz around Sherman with a motto that can be seen in everything involving Sherman athletics.
"Bring it back."
It's a slogan that first-year head coach J.D. Martinez says exemplifies they way the Bearcats will approach football.
"Bring back that pride and tradition, everything that made Sherman great in the past," Martinez said. "We need to dust it off, polish it up and show these kids that they deserve to win"
Sherman is coming off a season where it went 1-9, with the lone win coming via a forfeit. The players are confident that losing will soon be a thing of the past.
"Winning," Senior wide receiver Daishawn Nelson said with a smile. "That's what we are going to do. We are going to win."
"Keep working hard," Senior quarterback Blaine Bethel said. "Coach Martinez has led us to work hard this summer, and I think he can lead us to winning."
Martinez isn't the only new face in Sherman.12 of the 15 coaches on the staff are new to the school. Despite the fresh faces, Martinez is already speaking highly about his new 'family'.
"Hopefully they are going to be head coaches or coordinators (in the future)," Martinez said. "I want them to be the happiest they can be and take care of their families. I want a family atmosphere out here. It's important to have that with these coaches."
The Bearcats are more than ready to hit the field again, and they believe 2016 will be one to remember.
"I'm going to be amped up and excited to play," Bethel said. "I'm really excited!"
"I'm really excited to play against Denison, our rival," Nelson said. "That's big. I'm also excited about the playoffs because that's where we are going to go."
