DURANT, OK-- A Durant high school student is in custody after police said he threatened to shoot dozens of students and staff members at the school.

Police said the juvenile sent threatening messages online saying he was going to shoot at least 26 students and staffers.

Police contacted the boy and he was taken into custody by the Department of Mental Health.

They encourage parents and staff to be aware of strange behavior among students and report it immediately.

"Any type of behavior whether it's an electronic message or whether it's change in the behavior of a student, it's important to act on these instances," Buddy Faulkner said.

Police said other concerning threats were made to one student previously. But this was the first time the student threatened to endanger the lives of peers and staff.
