TISHOMINGO, OK (MSC) -- Several Murray State College softball players received honors from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) this past week. Seven players were named to the NJCAA Division II, Region 2 All-Region team. Second baseman Nacona Presgrove was also chosen as the NJCAA DII Player of the Week for her performance in the region tournament.
“Everyone played great during the region tournament,” says MSC Head Softball Coach Marie Stone. “We hit the ball with authority and were able to score early and capitalize on the other teams mistakes.”
Named to the NJCAA Division II, Region 2 All-Region 1st Team were: Kenzi Clapp, Bryanne Knox, Nacona Presgrove, and Katie McElroy. Clapp, a sophomore outfielder from Durant, ended the tournament hitting 3 for 9 with a RBI and a sacrifice fly. Bryanne Knox, a sophomore outfielder from Dickson, was 3 for 7 with 5 stolen bases. Stone says both of the players contributed outstanding defensive play to the tournament. Katie McElroy, a freshman from Hallsville, Texas, hit 3 for 9 with a double, a triple, and 4 RBIs.
Named to the All-Region 2nd Team were pitcher Katie Miller, and infielders Meagan Blake and Rachel Noble.
Up next for the team is the District Tournament. The team faces off again Neosho Community College in the first round in Topeka, Kansas. Stone says she feels her team matches up well against the Panthers. This is the first time the team has traveled to Kansas for the tournament.
“Districts will be a new challenge,” says Stone. “We expect the teams to be tougher, and the tournament format is double elimination. This year we do not have the advantage of being able to play any post season games in state.”
