Southeastern's Powell named GAC men's hoops player of the week
DURANT, Okla. (SE) – Following his performances in wins over Tulsa and Northwestern Oklahoma State, Southeastern's Danny Powell has been named the Great American Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week.
Powell, a sophomore forwards from Phoenix, Ariz., turned in 18.5 ppg last week and averaged a double-double by adding 11.5 rebounds per game.
Over two games he shot 47.8 percent from the floor and hit five threes while also dishing four assists and adding a pair of blocked shots.
In the win over TU, Powell led the Savage Storm with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting with three three-point buckets and eight rebounds.
The win was the first for SE over a Division I school since joining the NCAA in 1996, and the first loss for the Golden Hurricane to a non-D-I school since 1977.
In the overtime win over the Rangers, Powell turned in a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds.
The Storm will be off for nearly three weeks before returning to action at 3 p.m. on Jan. 3, 2015, against Southwestern Oklahoma State in Bloomer Sullivan Arena.
