Mosquito Sample Taken In Denison Tests Positive For West Nile Virus

Posted:
DENISON, TX -- After going all year without a single detection, a group of mosquitoes in Grayson County has now tested positive for West Nile Virus.

The sample came from a home in Denison that's near a school and a place where kids play. The Health Department says they've been testing since may, but out of 250 samples, just like last August at this time, the first positive test is now back.

It's déjà vu for one city worker who hosts the sample trap where the virus was found.

"You just kind of roll it and then you've got this shoestring," says Robert Graham.

A mixture of water and grass clippings creates a foul smell, luring mosquitoes into Graham's trap.

"There it goes. See how it's moving?" says Graham.

The battery powers a fan that brings them up into the net.

"We have 'em out in the backyard that he puts out on Wednesdays and then he takes everything there and he just found out today that we've got the West Nile," says Janet Graham.

Health department director Amanda Ortez says Graham's sample from last week on W. Burrell Street, near the new Henry Scott Middle School, tested positive.

"This is again the first pool, but we've not had any human cases of West Nile Virus reported to us," says Ortez.

"Kind of scary," says Janet Graham.

"I don't like it. I don't like it at all," says Pam Williams.

Ortez says they count the mosquitoes themselves and that particular sample had 111.

It was then sent off to a Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Lab and mixed, where it tested positive for West Nile.

That means at least one, if not more, had it. There's no way to count once the bugs are blended in the lab.

"My grandson got bit the other day and I don't know what it was, what kind of 'squito it was, but he hasn't been sick, so I guess he's okay," says Williams.

A total of 19 other samples across the county tested negative, and one in Van Alstyne had no mosquitoes at all!

"I use mosquito repellent when I go outside," says Diana Holder.

"I use Avon oil," says Williams.

"I spray it all over my legs and arms and I sweat so much it doesn't matter," says Mike Neasbitt. "Deep Woods Off. I put it on every time I go out there."

Ortez says using a DEET-containing repellent, along with not going outside around dusk and dawn, dressing with long sleeves and pants, and draining standing water are key.

"I don't want to get the West Nile Virus! I never have worried about it too much," says Kay Ross.

Graham's yard is not far from the Boys and Girls Club.

"It has to be by licensed person to use any kind of repellents or so forth, and so we do have people who come out and spray once a month or as necessary," says Club executive director Ron Nixon.

Ortez says 80 percent of people bitten never know they are infected. They will be doing extra "surveillance" in that neighborhood and plan to follow the virus through November or December.
