POTTSBORO, TX -- A district championship with single digit seniors still baffles Texoma football fans.
"I'm not sure to be honest with you, but we had a lot of things go our way. We had the ball bounce our way in a few different games and we just had some young guys that stepped up and played that we didn't expect to be playing on Friday night to be quite honest with you and exceeded our expectations by far," head coach Matt Poe said.
It doesn't matter how it happened. The coaching was there, the players responded and a district "three-peat" was in the cards.
"We're excited about the guys coming back and our goal every year is to win the district championship, you know we've won the last three in a row and the fourth one sure would be nice and we think we have the players to do that,"Poe added.
Fifteen starters return including both quarterbacks, their running back, the entire secondary. It's no mystery the "Dirty Birds" are the early favorite to take the 5-3A crown.
"these guys are my family, so it would be awesome to have that memory with these guys," senior center Carson Heady said.
"It proves that it will just take all of us just working together as a family, just as one and just giving it our all," senior corner back and receiver Isaiah Urquizo added.
Easier said than done. This league is considered one, if not the toughest in the class. But it's hard to doubt a program that doesn't leave any.
"It's going to be tough. You know, we got really good teams, good coaching staffs, I mean you're going to have to play your best every Friday night to be successful," Poe said.
"I'm ready to get going, I'm ready to start this thing up. I'm ready to knock some helmets off," Heady concluded.
