"I just lost it man," Murder Trial Begins for Man Accused of Killing Family

BONHAM, TX --  A Fannin county accused of killing three family members is in court today.

  Heard opening arguments today and the defense offered its startling version of events, but first a little background on the case

Fifty-three-year-old Thomas Taunton is accused of shooting to death his step father Harold Harpst, mother Sue Harpst and sister Regina Taunton in the family's Leonard home January 15, 2012.

Today the defense said Thomas Taunton will take the stand offer his version of events: that Harold Harpst was abusive and Harold, not Thomas, shot and killed Regina and Sue. The defense says Taunton acted in self-defense when he shot Harold, and the trauma from those events led Thomas Taunton to act irrationally, dumping the bodies along Highway 11, and fleeing the state

The state maintains Taunton killed his family in cold blood and presented a chilling phone call, in which taunt on confesses to the crime
. In that phone call, Taunton called a friend who took an audio recording. Taunton tells the friend he is on his way to Mississippi because he had just killed his three family members and dumped their bodies. Family members in the court room were visibly upset as the recording played and Taunton can be heard saying, "I just lost it man."
