ADA - East Central University Head Soccer Coach Riley Bailey has announced the addition of Erik Solberg to assist with the coaching duties starting in the 2014 season.
"We're excited that Erik is joining the Tiger family here at East Central," said Bailey. "His passion and energy for coaching is contagious and he is ready to hit the ground running. He has excelled at the highest levels of NCAA athletics and has gained valuable experience through his recent coaching stops."
Solberg comes to the Lady Tigers after spending a season at Nicholls State as a volunteer assistant where he helped the Colonels to a 12-6-2 record in 2013. During the 2013-14 season he was also served as the head boys soccer coach at Ponchatoula High School and the U12 St. Charles Soccer Club team, which won the Louisiana State Cup in 2014.
The Chicago, Ill., native was member of the Ole Miss and Southeastern Louisiana track and field teams. Solberg earned two letters at Ole Miss in track and cross country before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies in 2012. He then completed his athletic eligibility at Southeastern Louisiana while pursuing a master's degree in business administration.
Solberg earned academic honors at both schools, earning Southland Conference Academic Honor Roll and SEC Academic Honor Roll accolades. While at Ole Miss he also played midfield for the school's club soccer team, where he was also responsible for coordinating, planning and coaching practices.
"While I'm excited about his coaching abilities, I'm most impressed with the quality of person he is and his outlook on life and the good influence he'll bring to our players," Bailey added. "I look forward to working with Erik and I'm confident that he will help the Tiger soccer program take the necessary steps to return to the top of the conference."
A High School All-American, Solberg was inducted into Buffalo Grove High School's Hall of Fame after a sixth place finish in the 2000-meter steeplechase at the 2007 USATF National Youth Track and Field Championships. He was also on the 2003 USATF National Junior Olympic team champion in cross country.
Formerly a violinist in the Lafayette-Oxford-University Orchestra, Solberg served on the leadership teams at Ole Miss and SLU for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
