Former sheriff sentenced to 5 years in prison

McALLEN, Texas (AP) - A former South Texas sheriff who previously pleaded guilty to money laundering has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Former Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino (treh-VEEN'-yoh) was facing up to 20 years in prison at his sentencing Thursday in McAllen. He pleaded guilty April 14, about two weeks after resigning as sheriff.

His former commander, Jose Padilla, faces up to 10 years in prison for accepting a bribe. He also faces sentencing in McAllen on Thursday.

Trevino admitted to laundering campaign contributions tied to a convicted drug trafficker.

His plea came three days before Padilla pleaded guilty to accepting a bribe. Padilla said he took cash from the suspected drug trafficker in return for performing tasks for him and keeping him informed of law enforcement activities.
