Local MMA Fighter Gets Ready for Title Match

DURANT, OK ---- If you're an MMA fan from the Texoma area chances are you've heard of Damon "The Leech" Jackson.

"We have great pride in Damon here in Durant. He's a great example of if you work hard what you can get," Durant head wrestling coach Jim Taylor

Jackson has been wrestling since seventh grade, he was state runner-up his senior season at Durant High School and then went on to be an All-American at Missouri Valley College. And now he's putting DHS wrestling on the map with an undefeated pro MMA career.

"When you get a young man that has success, on the college level and then on into MMA and the professional level in MMA, it's an attainable goal. Kids see that if I'm willing to work, I can attain this, that's something that I can achieve. It set the bar for the rest of the kids that come through Durant's wrestling program," Taylor said.

"For MMA-wise there hasn't been a lot of people that have pursued their MMA career and so...if I bring anything to anyone and they pursue MMA because of me then that's great but I wouldn't push it on anyone...I would say go join the wrestling team for sure," MMA fight and former Durant Lion wrestler Damon Jackson said.

On July 18, Jackson will fight in his first title match and he hopes that come July 19,, he'll have a belt to bring back to his hometown.

"The support I get from Durant and anything that I can do to bring back to Durant, you know, it means a lot to me," Jackson said.

"I'm looking forward to Friday to going down and screaming and yelling my head off for him," Taylor said.

Jackson will face off against Leonard Garcia in the Legacy 33 Featherweight title match at Allen Event Center on Friday, July 18 at 7 PM. Tickets are available at www.cagetix.com or at the Allen Event Center Box Office.
