Sherman Man Arrested After Woman Brutally Attacked On Quiet Road

SHERMAN, TX -- A Sherman man is arrested and charged with aggravated sexual assault after police say he attacked a woman at knifepoint on a quiet road.

About an hour after wrapping up Sherman's big fireworks show, police were called to a brutal attack on the south side of town.

Police say the victim was able to describe her attacker  a man with a white shirt and blue denim shorts with a knife. After disseminating a description of his truck, they made an arrest the next day.

Police say the 9-1-1 call came in very late Thursday around 11:50 p.m. from a woman saying her daughter was being attacked.

Officers went to the gas station in the 100 block of W. F.M. 1417, but no one was there. They later found the victim, who's in her early 20s, at the emergency room.

"She told us that she had been sexually assaulted at knife point by a Hispanic male that was unknown to her," says police Sgt. D.M. Hampton.

Police say they started looking for a red Chevy pickup with a tool box, and found video of the suspect in a convenience store with the same truck.

The next day, Officer Tal Rhew spotted the truck here in the 1600 block of S. Crockett.

"And he actually found the pickup truck and confirmed the identity of who the person was based on the video surveillance and then the truck itself," says Hampton.

Police say they got a warrant and searched the house, and arrested Alexis Yanez-Morin, 22.

"That's really frightening actually. I had no idea that's something that was going on here," says neighbor Audrey Cole.

"There were 3 cars over there," says neighbor Annice Hammonds, who spotted the police activity.

"They stayed a while, we actually left right after they came," says Mack Hammonds.

Police say the victim reported the attack happened somewhere northwest of F.M. 1417 and Highway 75.

Officers say they located a crime scene and evidence here in the 500 block of Old Dorchester Road.

"It surprises me if anything like that happened," says neighbor Reggie Smith.

"They just had fireworks out around here, the neighbors did, on Fourth of July and that's all I know of anything going on out  here," says neighbor Marilynn Conrad.

The victim was sent to Plano for a sexual assault exam. Police say she also had bruises and cuts.  Neighbors on Crockett St. say they say the police activity that ended with Yanez-Morin under arrest.

"I drove by on my way home one day and I just saw I think 3 or 4 cop cars and there were a few guys walking around the building," says Cole.

"This is the old part of Sherman and there's been stuff going on around here for years!" says James Brasher, who was visiting family.

Yanez-Morin was booked into the Grayson County Jail early Saturday morning and he's being held on a charge of aggravated sexual assault. His bond is set at $100,000 and he also has an immigration hold.
