ADA, OK -- Two people are behind bars charged with child abuse.

A Pontotoc County couple was arrested after the sheriff's office says they violently abused the father's 9-year old son.

Deputies say it happened in a mobile home earlier this month in Latta, just outside of Ada.

"This is I believe the first time that I've ever dealt with this," said Sheriff John Christian. "It was just heartbreaking."

Christian says the 9-year old son of Jeffrey and Brandy Graham, who has cerebral palsy, was severely malnourished and dehydrated with bruises and scratches all over his body.

Deputies say the boy had a walker and leg braces to help him move around but his parents tried to confine him in his room.

"The little boy had been taped, duct taped to his bed and they stuck socks in his mouth to keep him from screaming," said Christian.

The pictures of the alleged abuse were not released because they were deemed too graphic to show.

The child told investigators his step mother beat his head against a wall multiple times and spread his legs.

"She wanted him to hurt, she felt like that he was the cause of her losing a baby," said Christian.

Bonnie Cathy who lived next door to the Graham's mobile home, remembers the little boy fondly.

"Just a sweetheart, I enjoyed talking to him," said Cathy.

Cathy says the Grahams were fairly new to the neighborhood.

"I just talked to her that one time," said Cathy. "And I kind of felt unwelcome over there so I didn't stay very long."

The Grahams were arrested and face charges of child abuse, child neglect and failing to protect.

"I don't know how people do this. It hurts," said Christian.

Christian says both remain in the Pontotoc County justice center, each with half a million dollar bonds.

The sheriff says the boy and the couple's other children are in DHS custody.
