GAINESVILLE, TX--Texoma police are still trying to piece together the details of exactly what happened during a weekend homicide. Reality is only now starting to set in for the family of the man who was killed after spending the weekend in shock. They say he was killed during a senseless argument with a stranger.
"I told them my dad got stabbed, and they asked for my address, so I said '714 Harvey Street," said Anthony Neal--the victim's 7-year-old son.
Neal dialed 911 about 9 Friday night after his dad stumbled into their home bleeding. Johnny Terrell Smith, 34, had been stabbed in his abdomen.
Neal said: "I was like this in my head 'is this a trick?' So he took his shirt off, and I was like it's not a trick."
Smith's girlfriend says it started Friday afternoon when 43-year-old Victor Martinez accused Smith of talking to his 13-year-old daughter on the street. She and other family members say that didn't happen.
"He's got two 3-year-old daughters. He would never try to talk to someone underage," said Brandon Neal, Smith's girlfriend.
Smith's mother, Barbara, said, "If he thought someone was messing with his child, he should have picked up the phone and called the law."
Family members tell us the stabbing happened on the corner of 700 Harvey Street where Smith was hanging out with a cousin. They say Martinez approached the house trying to pick a fight, and the situation escalated.
"They said it was like he was on something, like he was just freaking out," said Brandon Neal. "All that self defense--that's crap. You came over here to harm somebody, because you had a knife."
Witnesses say Martinez  ran away after he stabbed Smith. Gainesville police found him a few blocks away and arrested him later Friday night. Smith's family says the two men were strangers.
"We want him to pay for what he did, and let Terrell rest in peace," said Brandon Neal. "Stop trying to slander his name and say he was trying to talk to a 13-year-old girl when we all know, anybody who knows him knows, that he would never do anything like that."
Smith was taken to North Texas Medical Center in Gainesville, then flown to Plano Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
