MCALESTER, OK -- Prison officials say condemned inmate Clayton Lockett died from a massive heart attack after the three lethal drugs failed to kill him.

Media witnesses say soon after the execution began, Lockett was mumbling and moving.

He tried to lift himself off the gurney and told the doctor "something's wrong."

A curtain was closed to block the view as he showed more distress.

An attending physician says Lockett's vein exploded, and he was pronounced dead from a massive heart attack.

"So from 6:23, the execution started. 6:39 is when they closed the curtains on us. A 16-minute process to watch," said one media witness.

"I notified the attorney general's office, the governor's office, of my intent to stop the execution. And requested a stay of 14 days for the second execution scheduled this afternoon," said Robert Patton, Corrections Director.>

Lockett was convicted of shooting a 19-year-old  with a sawed-off shotgun and watching as two accomplices buried her alive back in 1999.

Charles Warner, another inmate who was supposed to be executed tonight was granted a stay by governor Mary Fallin.

His execution is on hold while investigators try to figure out what went wrong.

Warner was convicted of raping and killing his roommate's 11-month-old child back in 1997.
