Two Denison teens arrested after high speed chase

DENISON, TX -- The Texas Department of Public Safety says 18 year old Austin Mitchell and the 16 year old driver took the 40 thousand dollar jeep through Grayson and Collin County before a flat tire slowed them down.

The suspects had no problem talking to our cameras, but DPS says the men refused to cooperate when troopers who finally caught them at about 9 a.m. Thursday.

Fred Pilkilton owns the dealership the car was stolen from.  He says when he arrived at work today he immediately knew something was wrong.

"We got to work this morning and noticed a red jeep was gone," said Pilkilton. "And I got to looking around and sure enough it was gone. We had a broken window for the showroom floor and had some other damage and had a broken window out of another pick up."

Pilkilton called Denison police to investigate. But shortly after they arrived, DPS called him.

"The high way patrol calls us and said hey we're in pursuit of a red jeep, are you guys missing one?," said Pilkilton. "And I said yes we are."

Troopers say the pursuit started on Highway 75 in Van Alstyne, went through Collin County, and eventually ended  near King street and Throckmorton in Sherman.

Pilkilton says he is still figuring out the estimated damage and is left wondering why his dealership was a target.

"Funny to me that they were able to go through all the keys, find the key to that jeep, which by the way was unmarked," said Pilkilton. "We had just gotten that jeep in yesterday morning, had it cleaned and ready for the lot that night."

He says he even tried to ask the suspects himself.

"I did wonder up to that car and ask that young man why he stole my jeep. He wasn't interested in visiting with," said Pilkilton.

Denison police say the charges include over 20,000 in theft. Mitchell will be booked into the Grayson County jail. The 16 year old driver is still in police custody.
