DENISON -- Investigators in Grayson County are trying to determine the identity of a woman found inside a sunken vehicle at Lake Texoma.

Denison firefighters were called to Eisenhower State Park at about 5:30pm on Monday.

Divers began suiting up shortly afterwards to search the water at the end of a boat ramp where witnesses reported seeing a vehicle sink.

"Bystanders said they witnessed the vehicle driving off but that nobody exited the car," Denison assistant fire chief Bill Ray said.

By nightfall, divers located the vehicle -- a 4-door older model Volvo -- with a woman still inside.

Jessica and Christopher Winchester were in the park at the time and stopped after seeing all the lights from emergency vehicles.

"You hear about it happening but you never think it's going to happen or you're going to see it," Jessica said. "It was kind of a thinker."

Investigators are still gathering details but say they believe the car careened off a rock next to the ramp before hitting the water.

The car was upside down when divers found it. The woman they found inside was between the ages of 50 and 60 years old.

The game warden and the Grayson County Sheriff's Office will work to notify the woman's next of kin.

As they look for clues, it's more than investigators searching for answers.

"I couldn't imagine, I'm just trying to figure out how could somebody drive it off into a lake if it was an accident. If it wasn't, why would they?" Jessica Winchester asked.
