RALEIGH, N.C., Feb. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- North Carolina's electric cooperatives continue to monitor weather conditions and encourage members to be prepared in case winter weather causes power outages in the coming days.

Now is the time to take precautions to ensure that you and your family stay warm and safe in the days ahead.  The American Red Cross recommends making an emergency preparedness kit that includes water, nonperishable food, flashlights, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, extra batteries, medicines and a first aid kit. It is also a good idea to charge your cell phone now.

North Carolina residents are encouraged to download the ReadyNC app from the N.C. Department of Public Safety to tablets and smart phones.  The free application provides information on weather, safety, traffic, outage reporting numbers and links to websites that will be helpful in the event of a disaster. It is available for free in the App Store for iPhones and Google Play Store for Android devices.

North Carolina's electric cooperatives are ready to respond should outages occur as a result of the predicted winter weather. Electric cooperative members are asked to call their cooperative directly if they experience a disruption in power. For phone numbers to report outages and the counties served by each co-op, refer to www.ncelectriccooperatives.com/co-ops/coopList.htm.

North Carolina's electric cooperatives serve more than 2.5 million people in 93 of the state's 100 counties.
