Two Dead in Madill Plant Explosion

MADILL, OK--- A plant explosion in Madill claimed the lives of two men earlier this afternoon.

Workers at the Mid American Steel and Wire plant watched in disbelief as emergency crews arrived at the scene.

"Madill Fire Department responded," Marshall County Sheriff Ed Kent said. "There was fire inside the building."

At around 4 p.m., dispatch received a call of a furnace exploding at the plant.

"I don't know how many people were in the area or in the building," Sheriff Kent said.

Sheriff Kent said the explosion instantly killed two men and injured another man. That man was taken to Marshall Memorial Hospital to be treated for burns to the head. Sheriff Kent said he's expected to be okay.

"The next of kin has been notified on the two fatalities," Sheriff Kent said. "We're awaiting the medical examiner and the fire marshal to come and start their investigation."

Sheriff Kent said natural gas is used at the factory that makes agricultural and industrial wire products, but he's not sure if that's linked to the cause of the explosion. He said once the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) completes their investigation, more information should be available.

Sheriff Kent said the names of the two men should be released tomorrow.
