New Mardi Gras Festival Coming To Sherman Next Month

SHERMAN, TX -- A taste of Mardi Gras is coming to Grayson County next month.

Downtown Sherman Preservation & Revitalization is planning a Red River Mardi Gras and Jazz Festival on Feb. 22.

Fulbelli's co-owner Heather LaRosa says they started talking about it after the restaurant got two balconies last year.

Organizers told the city council that they hope this event will draw more visitors to hotels after the city's hotel-motel tax revenues dropped last year.

"We're putting some packages together that will include a hotel night, tickets to the event, of course tickets to the Jazz Museum, and then we will be hosting here at Fulbelli's a Dixieland jazz brunch on the Sunday," says LaRosa. "So, we're trying to package that all together to get some people outside of the area so it's an increased revenue coming into Grayson County."

LaRosa says it will likely replace the group's Saint Patrick's Day event, and will include live jazz, a crawfish boil, and gumbo cookoff. In future years, they hope to form "krewes" to raise money for charity.
