Dozens Cast Their Lines At Trout Derby In Denison

DENISON, TX -- Dozens of fishermen battled the wind this morning during a fishing derby at Waterloo Lake.

The Adult Trout Derby was one of three organized each year by the city's Parks and Recreation Department.

Organizers say more than 50 people cast their lines in search of trout the city stocked in the pond in mid-December and on Friday.

"The rainbow trout is really neat because it's a winter-only fishing opportunity," says city parks Athletic Supervisor Andrew Means. "It's not year-round. We don't have cold enough waters here in this area for trout year-round, so we stock them just in the winter months."

The derby wrapped up with a hot dog lunch. For seven years, the event has been named for Howard Caylor, a city worker who died when a tree fell on him while working at Waterloo Lake.

Means says there's still fish out there if you want to try your hand at finding them.
