CARTER COUNTY, OK -- A man is in the Carter County jail charged with cruelty to animals after the sheriff's office says he killed a family pet.

The Carter County sheriff's office says Douglas Randall Davis stabbed the family pet, a black pit bull, numerous times with a knife on December 23 at the family's home on Sandy Creek Road.

Sheriff Milton Anthony says the dog belonged to the people Davis was living with at the time.

They were not home when the stabbing occurred.

District attorney Craig Ladd said that Davis was arraigned on New Year's Eve and a preliminary hearing is set for February 18 at 9 AM.

Davis is currently being held at the Carter County jail on a $2,000 bond.

If convicted, Ladd says Davis could face up to five years in prison.
