ARDMORE, OKLAHOMA -- With the ice and snow melting on the ground the toll it's taken on the roads can now be seen.

Last weekend's winter storm left Ardmore roads covered in ice and snow.

Now that things are thawing out and clearing up, what kind of long term affects does all the ice and snow have on roads?

"Ii mean it's year round," said Dan Olive, Ardmore Street Supervisor. "And the cold weather does have an effect on them. But we have set guidelines that we try to go through that helps that out."

Olive says potholes and cracks in roads can be formed by the thawing and refreezing of water.

But he says Ardmore's engineering department combats that all year long.

"Year round if there's an area that has bad cracks in it we try to get that area dug up resurfaced to keep this from happening," said Olive.

The city of Ardmore's engineering department says it takes several thaw and freeze cycles over a period of several years before visible deteriorations could be seen on the roadways.

Wayne Busma, city engineer of Ardmore, says roads in Ardmore held up fine through the storm.

"It was not a good time to be on the roads driving, and the public did a really good job of just staying off the roads," said Busma.

As for the county roads, Carter County commissioners say they've held up as well, even if there are a few slick spots

"The majority are cleared off, it's some of the backroads that don't get traveled a whole lot they're a little bit worse on conditions," said Joe David McReynolds.

While it may take a few more thaws and freezes for a pothole to pop up, for Busma and Olive, keeping the roads in good shape through the winter is just business as usual.

"it's just normal, just normal stuff," said Olive.

Busma says that the city of Ardmore has an ongoing program that spends an average of 1.5 million on street resurfacing each year.
