Early Morning Fire Has Sherman Firefighters Counting Their Blessings

SHERMAN, TX---- Sherman firefighters are counting their blessings after ice at an early morning fire had them slipping and sliding.

The fire happened around 3 a.m. this morning at the Hilltop Village Apartments, which are located right across from the Midway Mall in Sherman.

Firefighters said the fire started after a resident fell asleep while cooking. Fortunately, nearby neighbors saw it and called the Sherman Fire Department. Firefighters said they were able to put out the fire in about thirty minutes.

About 27 firefighters battled the blaze that engulfed a two-story building. At least six apartments were damaged by the fire and at least seven people were displaced.

"As I understand, there were a couple of people inside that building that were immobile and needed some help getting out," Sherman Fire Department Chief J.J. Jones said. "We were really lucky. Had the fire not been discovered as quick as it was, or had the fire department not arrived as quickly as they did, we could have had a real tragedy on our hands."

Firefighters said a thick layer of ice at the complex created several problems for them and many of them slipped and fell on it multiple times. They said luckily, no one was seriously hurt, but just to be safe, a few of them are having their injuries looked at by a doctor.
