ARDMORE, OKLAHOMA -- Students in Ardmore will be celebrating Veterans Day a little early.

Students at the middle school have been decorating the cafeteria walls in preparation for a visit by local veterans scheduled for Friday.

The assembly will include performances by the school band and choir.

Social studies teacher Derek Crawford says this is the first recognition event for veterans in the Ardmore schools system in recent memory.

"We just tried to reach out in anyway possible because we know every opportunity we get to say thank you is an opportunity for our students here to learn what a personal touch it is to share a community with heroes," said Crawford.

The assembly will begin at 10:30 in the school's gym.

Crawford says all veterans from across the area are welcome to attend.
