ECU Student Shot to Death Remembered by Students and Staff

ADA, OK-- Students and faculty members at East Central University in Ada are mourning the loss of a student who was gunned down in Duncan on Friday.

22-year-old Chris Lane was studying finance at ECU. He was on a baseball scholarship and was recruited from an El Reno school.

Lane came all the way from Australia to chase an American dream.

"Chris had those leadership skills and he had those communication skills," said Jeff Williams, ECU Athletic Director. "He truly understood what being a student athlete was about."

Duncan police said Lane was shot and killed in a drive by shooting. Investigators said it happened shortly before 3 o'clock Friday afternoon.

Lane was visiting his girlfriend and decided to go jogging when three teens drove by, picked lane out randomly and shot him.

"The motive we were given Sunday afternoon when the 17 year old decided to talk to us was that they were bored, they didn't have anything to do so they killed somebody," said Danny Ford, Duncan Police Chief.

Police said all three teens are in jail facing first degree murder charges.
Students and faculty members say they're hearts go out to the family.

"It's always bad to hear a tragedy especially here at ECU, it's close to my heart so when I heard about it I was sad for him, even though I didn't know him I still felt for him and his family," said Jamal Edwards, ECU student.

"Right now we would like the lane family to know the tiger family is thinking about them, our thoughts and prayers are going to them right now," said Williams.

A fund has been set up by the community of Ada to help the family.

The "Chris Lane Memorial" fund is set up through the Bank of the West in Ada.
