Disk Drive With Patient Records Disappears In Sherman

SHERMAN, TX -- Police are investigating after patient information disappeared from a doctor's office. The office lost a computer drive containing medical records, and so far there's no report of any problems.

However, they are warning all their patients to check their bank accounts. According to a Dallas law firm representing the North Texas Comprehensive Spine and Pain Center, the office notified nearly 3,000 patients of a "potential information breach."

The office on West Lamberth and Travis is run by Sree Vattam. The firm says an external hard drive was stolen and that it contained medical records with items on each patient like name, social security number, birthdate, home address and diagnosis.

They say they reported the theft to police back in June and that the employee responsible for the theft was fired. So far, there's no evidence the information was improperly used.

Patients are being urged to check their credit reports with the three credit bureaus and set up a fraud alert, and to monitor their account statements closely, the firm said.
