POTTSBORO, TX --- The Pottsboro Cardinals are coming off a couple of dream seasons. Winning back to back district titles and even going undefeated into the postseason last year.
Unfortunately for them, 16 seniors are gone. Several of whom are going to play college ball. With only five returning starters, the quest for a three-peat gets a little bit complicated.
"A lot of them haven't played on Friday night, so it's going to be interesting to see how they adjust to that and I know they will, we've got some talent, but we're just going to be really young. It's going to be fun to see how they develop," Pottsboro head coach, Matt Poe said.
The group before this year's Cardinal squad helped add to the program's storied tradition.
With the scarlet and white seeing so much success over the years, the bar has been set.
"The higher we set our goals, the higher our kids are going to reach and they know that we set high expectations for them and they do a good job trying to meet those expectations, so we look to win the district championship. That's our goal," Poe said.
The young Cardinals will be tested. They believe the studying they did under last year's historic class has them ready to carry the torch.
"we've got some pretty good guys coming in behind them, but it's next man up, we've got to get the job done," Poe said.
"It's going to be tough but I think we can work hard enough to make up for it," Pottsboro senior center, Austin Lawrence said.
"They prepared us, they made us know we have to do what we have to do to win and we just got to prepare, we got to win. We will win," Pottsboro senior right tackle, Chase Harmon said.
