TOM BEAN, TX -- The Tom Bean Tomcats are no strangers to change, especially when it comes to the coaching staff. The 2014 senior class as seen three new head coaches throughout their high school careers; including their newest head coach Allen Cross who will be leading the Tomcats this season.
"We just haven't found the right thing. But we need it here and we might have something now," Tom Bean senior nose tackle/center, Dustin Dean said.
"It's a small, hardworking, farm-type community. And I'm really seeing that through the work ethic. When I got here in the spring, in the offseason, the summer workouts, and even the start of practices. These kids have worked really hard and they want to succeed," head coach Allen Cross said.
The Tomcats have had a losing record for the last four seasons, going 12-29 since 2009. But last season, with a 5-5 record, they made to the first round of the playoffs but they couldn't get the win. Now, they're more motivated than ever before.
"The excitement is a lot more and we hadn't experienced it before and were ready for this year," Dean said.
"Their expectations are to improve over that. So it's easy for those seniors and juniors that were sophomores last year and juniors last year. They saw what it took to get to the playoffs. So its easier to sell the expectations and what we need to do to work to get to the playoffs again. They know what to do," Cross said.
When it comes to the 2013 season, the sky is the limit for these Tomcats.
"Our goal is 10-0 and a district championship. Most people have that goal. And were really going to stress each week, what it takes to get there," Cross said. "We want to be a championship program and it really starts in practice. That's what were telling the kids; championships are won out here and were gonna try to build that each day and get better each day."
