WHITEWRIGHT, TX ---- For the past few years the name Tyrone Swoopes has been synonymous with Whitewright football. But with the Elite 11 QB now at University of Texas, the Tigers are taking on a whole new identity.
"Well he was very talented obviously. Every coaches dream. These guys have understood when you lose a kid like that, there's big shoes to fill. What we've done with a lot of these guys is understand that it's a team concept and everybody's role is very important," Whitewright head coach, Wes Rhoten said.
"It'll be a little different this year because we don't have that big star so we'll work as a team more and we'll just play," senior quarterback/running back/safety, Lee Mata said.
After going 1-9 last season, with arguably one of the best quarterbacks in the state, the Whitewright Tigers made some changes. They hired Wes Rhoten to be the new head coach and he's installed a unique way to run the offense.
"It's something that I've been familiar with the last couple years was the wristband offense, no huddle fast-paced, all that stuff. That's what were trying to install with them. And were gonna do what the kids can do. Right now were seeing if they can do this kind of stuff," Rhoten said.
"Certainly making everything easier, because the prior years that I've been on varsity, we signal in. I mean that's easy but this is way easier," senior quarterback/receiver/running back, Jefferson Ballard said.
The Tigers will look quite different when they take the field this season...with a new quarterback, a new head coach and a new style of offense. But for Whitewright the unfamiliar may come as a blessing.
"To me right now, everything's a win-win deal. You know, we're gonna play some people and I don't imagine there's a whole lot of people gonna project Whitewright to win some of these games. And were gonna win" Rhoten said. "Were gonna find ways to get on top and were gonna surprise some people. We're trying to get these guys to the playoffs, get them back where they need to be. And that's our plan, that's our goal. Were getting back to the playoffs in Whitewright"
