Sherman Residents Hold Candlelight Vigil For Shooting Victim

SHERMAN, TX -- Dozens gathered to remember one of the victims of a shooting in Hugo during a vigil held at Sherman High School tonight.

Friends released balloons in honor of Qualin Hayden, 19, of Sherman, who died in an overnight shooting in Hugo. They shouted, "We love you Qualin!"

Hayden was a student athlete at the school a little more than a year ago. A pastor said some words in Hayden's memory, and participants lit candles outside the front of the school.

Friends say the calls they received early this morning that Hayden and his cousin had both been shot came as an unbelievable shock. "I can't imagine life without him right now," says girlfriend Jasmine Wrenn. "It's gonna be hard, it's gonna be real hard, but me and his family and friends and loved ones, we're gonna get through it."

Wrenn says their child is due in about five months and they were about to find out the baby's gender. She says Hayden started working at Ruiz Foods in Denison back in April.

"I got the phone call. I was devastated. I didn't want to believe it, but i'm just hanging in there for my best friend," says friend Shanon Revels.

Hayden wore number 5 for the Sherman Bearcats basketball team. Hayden was the District 13-4A Player of the Year during his senior season. Hayden also played football and he went on to sign with Southeastern to play basketball for the Savage Storm.
