DURANT, OK--A non-profit organization in Durant is helping kids and families with the back-to-school necessities. Families Feeding Families is hosting its 10th annual backpack drive at the Hope Chest, located at 501 Northeast 4th Ave.

The drive is designed to give backpacks full of school supplies to any child or family in need. Families Feeding Families representatives say they gave out 500 backpacks today, and that they plan on having handed out 2,300 by the end of next month. All donations have come from local businesses.

Tish Burkhalter, director and co-founder of Families Feeding Families, said about the drive: "As a parent I understand what difference it makes for me, and our kids love it. We just get smiles from the kids, usually smiles from the parents...It makes a difference. They're ready to go, they're excited about going, so it's a good thing."

Members working at the Hope Chest advise anyone willing to volunteer or donate to contact them as soon as possible.
