Killeen Shooter Identified as Soldier From Texoma

KILLEEN, TX -- Police in Texas say a man from Texoma was the Fort Hood soldier that killed a police officer during a shootout over the weekend.

Killeen police say that 24-year-old Dustin Cole, a Clayton, Oklahoma native was armed with an A-K-47 assault weapon when he fatally shot officer Robert Hornsby.

Hornsby and other members of the police tactical team had responded to an apartment complex on complaints of an armed man threatening people at a pool.

Police found Cole at his apartment and as they approached they say he backed into the apartment and began firing, killing Hornsby and injuring another officer.  Cole also was killed.

Cole had been deployed to Afghanistan twice and just got back from his most recent deployment in February.

The funeral for the 32-year-old Hornsby is scheduled for tomorrow at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center.

He was married and the father of a 4-year-old and a 1-year-old.
