BOKCHITO, OK [UPDATE] -- Water is back on in the town of Bokchito after a contractor accidentally clipped the side of a water main earlier Wednesday morning.

Water only trickled out of faucets at homes and businesses much of the day.

Residents like Pam Lowrey say bathroom breaks had to be limited and dirty dishes and laundry couldn't get done.

"We were lucky enough to let the kids take a bath before they turned it off this morning. But, brushing their teeth was a pain because the water was hardly coming out," Lowrey said.

One convenience store had to put certain drink machines out of service after water was shut off across town.

"We contacted all the businesses and the people that we could beforehand and told them to draw up some water and make calls if they know somebody and try to get the word spread so that people could draw up water before we cut it off," Wayne Minyard with the Bokchito Public Utility Authority said.

The PUA says a contractor working to install a fiber optic line for a local phone company accidentally hit a water main on Highway 22.

"Since we do not have enough valves in town we wound up having to cut the whole town off to fix it," Minyard said.

Crews had to saw out a chunk of the water pipe to repair the line before service could be restored Wednesday around 2pm.

While it was out of service, the utility authority says it also decided to install another valve to hopefully prevent the entire town from losing water service if an accident like this ever happens again.

"So, it'll be another place where we can isolate the lines," Minyard said.

The city says it's flushing the line and chlorinating the water so there shouldn't be any problems with quality now that it's turned back on.

BOKCHITO, OK -- Residents in the town of Bokchito went without water for much of the day Wednesday. A water main break on Highway 22 caused service to be shut off around 10am.

The Public Utility Authority says a contractor working to install a fiber optic phone line hit the water main.

"We contacted all the businesses and the people that we could beforehand and told them to draw up some water and make calls if they know somebody and try to get the word spread so that people could draw up water before we cut it off," Wayne Minyard with the Bokchito Public Utility Authority said.

Water was turned off while crews worked to repair the line. At 2pn, the town said it was in the process of turning service back on.
