DENISON -- It reportedly began with a knock at the door of room number 44 at the Budget Inn in Denison.

Police say a 48-year-old man staying there opened the door, then claims he was assaulted. He told police he grabbed a hand gun and shot the man who was assaulting him.

Shane Lawrence lives two homes behind the motel and says he heard several gunshots.

"Those bullets could've flown through the wall of that house and come through our house, if you're using the right kind of gun. So, as far as that's concerned, yea, I was kind of scared," he said.

Denison police responded to the call at 9:50pm. Medics began to treat the man who'd been shot, but say he died a short time later.

Lawrence says he walked out of his home to see a swarm of emergency vehicles.

As of Monday afternoon, no arrests had been made.

The manager says the shooter has been staying at the motel for the past three weeks and has difficulty getting around on his own.

Lawrence says he's surprised to see this all go down right next to his home, but says not feeling safe is nothing new in his neighborhood.

"That motel is nothing but a drug motel. There's druggies in and out of there all the time, just like these apartments behind me. And I've been telling them and telling them, ya'll need to do something about it because if ya'll don't do something about it, because it's just getting worse over here, and eventually I'm going to end up moving," he said.

The owner of the motel didn't want to speak on-camera but said in 30 years of business, this is a first.
