SHERMAN, TX -- The Battle of the Axe usually plays out on the football field, but not today.

Denison Athletic Booster Club president Chris Shumaker and Sherman golf coach Clint Huhnke put aside school rivalries to organize a new Battle of the Axe Golf Tournament held at Stone Creek Golf Club on Saturday.

The idea is to generate interest and dollars for golf teams at both Sherman High School and Denison High School.

"It's just relaxing to get out here with the buddies and tell a few lies. It's just a fun game to play," says participant Brian Reed.

Organizers say 12 teams, many from area businesses, came to tee off, raising a couple thousand dollars. They hope to make this an annual golf scramble and use funds to get younger kids involved in golf. KTEN was proud to be one of the sponsors of today's event.
