Moyers superintendent exempts students from standardized test after tragedy

MOYERS, OK -- The same standardized test that gave thousands of Oklahoma students problems earlier this week is now giving one Texoma community even more stress. this time, though, it has nothing to do with technical glitches. "I was shocked," Moyers resident Linda Kellett said. People in Moyers are still trying to figure it out. "That's ridiculous. It makes no sense," parent Beth Leinau said. How could two students whose parents died over the weekend ever be expected to focus on a standa...More >>

MADILL, OK---- Today, dozens of Marshall County residents came together for a fundraiser to help the family of Skylar Briley of Madill. Briley died Saturday in a head-on collision near Mead.
This afternoon, the Madill community hosted a barbecue to raise money for his funeral.

Jack Jones hosted the barbecue. He said he had never met Briley, but that when he heard about his death, he immediately felt compelled to reach out to his family.

"Someone posted on Facebook about the family needing help and I wanted to help out," Jones said.

Jones said the family needs help covering funeral costs. He decided the best way to raise money was to sell lunches for $5 a plate and donate all the proceeds. This afternoon dozens of residents stopped by the Thrifty Center in Madill to show their support and eat brisket and pulled pork sandwiches.

"It's overwhelming," Jones said. "We've been bombarded and hopefully we'll get to raise a lot more  money for them."

Several of Briley's closest friends were also there collecting donations and remembering the 19-year-old who they said had such an outgoing personality.

"Skylar was outstanding," Montana Daniel said. "He was outstanding in school, he was an all around good guy, he was very friendly and he wasn't shy at all."

"He had a smile that you would never forget," Chase Huffman said. "A laugh that you would never forget and if you ever needed help with anything, he's that one person you could call and count on to be there."

Huffman said today's fundraiser is just one small way the Madill community can help someone who's made such a big difference in their lives.

Briley's funeral will take place this Saturday at Brown's Funeral Home in Madill at 5:30 p.m. If you would like to donate to Briley's funeral fund, you can send your donations to PO Box 797, Madill, Oklahoma, 73446.
