SHERMAN -- Head Start is a federally-funded program for children who turn three or four years old on or before September 1, 2013. Enrollment eligibility is based only on income.

Pre-kindergarten is a state-run program for children who are four years old on or before September 1, 2013.

There are several ways families can qualify for Pre-K.

It can be based on income, if English is not the child's native language, if they're the child of an active military member or if they're in a foster family.

Registration in Denison is on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9am to 6pm at the district offices located at 1201 South Rusk.

Sign-up in Sherman is Wednesday from noon to 7pm and on Thursday from 7am to 3pm at the district offices located at 2701 Loy Lake Road.

Documents need to enroll your child:
1. Birth certificate
2. Immunization records
3. Social security card
4. Proof of residence
5. Proof of income

Dr. Lauren Dill is the director of bilingual/ESL and district initiatives for Sherman ISD.

She says enrolling children in school early in life gives them a leg up later on.

"They just have those solid academic, social and emotional skills and it's really necessary in order for students to be successful once they go into kindergarten," Dr. Dill said.
