FANNIN COUNTY, TX -- A $26 million project is underway to double the size of Highway 82 for about 12 miles, but there is still a lot of work left before the expansion will be complete.
The Texas Department of Transportation is adding two lanes to Highway 82 from F.M. 1897 near Bells to F.M. 121 in Bonham. The project is contracted to DL Lennon Inc. of Commerce.
"Everyone just passes right by each other, of course the four lane divided highway is going to be a lot safer," says TxDOT Paris District spokesman Tray Turner.
The project, funded through the voter-approved funds from Proposition 12 in 2007, is years in the making, but will make travel in the area safer, Turner said. The Savoy exit is closed for ramp construction from westbound Highway 82.
