TxDOT's "Holiday P.A.S.S." asks Texans to Give the Gift of a Sober Ride

GRAYSON COUNTY, TX--- The holidays are here and the Texas Department of Transportation wants to make sure you are spending them safe at home and not behind bars.

As part of an effort to avoid drunk driving, TxDOT has launched the Holiday P.A.S.S. (Person Appointed to Stay Sober) campaign. As Texans plan to celebrate the holidays, TxDOT is encouraging people to "give the gift of a designated driver."

"Unfortunately during the holidays there are a lot of people drinking maybe more then they typically do. We're encouraging folks to pick a designated driver so that the holidays can be fun all through the season," TxDOT Area Engineer David Selman said.

Drinking and driving poses a major threat to all holiday travelers on the road. During last year's holiday season (Dec.1, 2011 through Jan.1, 2012) there was 2,462 traffic related crashes, 842 serious injuries and 78 fatalities all related to drunk driving.

"That's 78 families that were affected by somebody that could have stayed sober and drove or just stayed where they are or have somebody that was sober drive them," Sergeant D.M. Hampton said.

As part of the campaign, TxDOT has made a Pinterest page full of non-alcoholic drink recipes, party tips and gift certificates for sober drivers. To visit that page, click here.
